I have just started a Pirate contract and I have to say I am enjoying it.
The one thing I will say is that to begin with it is often better starting with one of the big 4 factions (from either Warmachine or Hoards). The reason I say this is that it makes things a lot more straight forward. The reason for that is that if you choose Khador (for example) you just buy anything that says Khador on the box. Two of the guys who started when I did and they choose mercs to start with and the guy who sold them their stuff knew nothing about the game, it seems, and they were luck that the extra stuff they bought went with their respective starter boxes. This coupled with they found it tougher using mercs than myself and the others who choose the main factions. All that being said, if you research what you buy carefuly mercs will serve you well, they just need a little more insight and forethought than jumping in with the main factions alows. You know what my recomendation would be. I would say depending on how many of you are wanting to give it a go is buy one of each (or one per person) of the starter sets (there are currently 6 Warmachine and 4 Hoards) and try them all. Then you can sort out who gets what after you have all played a few games. The only thing to remember is that the starter box sets are not nessiceraly balanced and some may do better than others (consistanly). The other thing to keep in mind is that trying to pick up both Warmachine and Hoards rules at the same time can be very confusing. The way I choose my first faction, Cryx, was purely on the models. And I would always recomend that way, the last thing you want is to paint models you hate to look at! Of course if you pay someone to paint your models for you then thats not so much of an issue ![]() Good luck in choosing anyway. |

Thanks Guys for your input. I have been looking into this more, but after I get some more information. I really just want to stick with an all Mercs group. Then again I am going to start off slow with just a piece at a time. The contracts look neat by the way they are written. Now it is just trying to figure out what each one means.
With that being said I still need to read up on all the other factions as well to learn more overall how things go before I really start buying minatures

As noone else has mentioned it here, Tabletop Commander is a very useful program for creating an army. It helps even more for the different contracts!

I'm a die hard protectorate of menoth player myself.
there's just something satifying about yelling "BURN HEATHEN, BURN!" at your opponent while proceeding to scoure his army from the table with fire and holy might

I play Khador. It started with the Battlebox, and I loved the Art on the front of it: Matt Wilson's Sorscha, Juggernaut and Destroyer. I kept at it, and eventually picked up Irusk.
Since then, people are happy that I don't play Trollbloods or Pirates because I pass enough tough rolls, people start questioning my dice. (In case you don't know, ATC, a Tough roll is made when your figure would normally be destroyed. You roll a d6 and if it comes up a 5 or a 6, then your figure remains in play but Knocked Down). |

I started with the cryxian battlegroup, because of the beastial look of 'jacks, especially the bonejacks (light warjacks of Cryx), who remind me of some enemies in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle video game. Now I have a pretty big collection of undead monstuosities.
I also play some Khadoran battlegroups (I love the "Bigger is better" way of mind of this faction) and Everblight's warpacks (Dragons rule!!!) PS: Please forgive me for possible mistakes, I don't practice english very often. PS2: Wow, extrem topic revival... |
