A question for Whitemoon's stuff:

Do you had a chance to play the game? what factions do you prefer? ;)

I know I am going to have to look into the factions more before I take a shot at answering this question. Then again for me being a n00b to Warmachine they all look cool.

Being an art and mech nerd, Khador was what first attracted me to the whole WARMACHINE world and to this day, I'm still a Khador fan, though the lovely Skarre keeps beckoning me towards Cryx... Hrm...

Sorry I am still to unfamiliar with the terms Xar.

There are 4 main factions, well, 5 if we add next month's new one (Retribution of Scyrah, angry elves).

In the first warmachine book, there was some mercenary models, certains miniatures that can be used in multiple factions, it was a very short list of characters (individuals with his own history), and they were solos (individuals you can add to the army to support).

Then, in the first expansion book (Escalation) thet add two Mercenary Warcaster, Magnus the Traitor (ex-cygnar warcaster, now a rebel), and Gorten Grundback (a Rhulic, the Iron Kingdoms's Dwarves). The point with this mercanry warcaster was to put them in 1000 points armies, cause you can add a warcaster for every 500 points.

But players start to play them alone, in part cause they were released with amazing starter sets, and cause they are very good models.

More time later, due to the general use of this warcaster alone, and people adding them other mercenaries to make only-mercenaries armies, Privateer decide to make some rules to create Mercenary armies and integrate them into the rules, so they made the "Mercenary Contracts"

When you make a Merc army, you choose a contract, and this contract says what models you can or can't add, and special rules if any.

More them later, Privateer decide to make some Pirates Models, they were a bunch of models at first, but things growth without control and they had a lot of models they wanted to make, so finally a new type of expansion was released, the book "Pirates of the Broken Coast". It introduces the Privateer's, a lot of models that con work together in a Pirate-style contract, or join any of the main factions as standr mercenaries or join another merc contracts under their specific rules if allowed.

It's a small book, with great fiction and lots of models, including some warjacks and 3 warcasters, if pirates are your taste, take a look at it in the nearest miniatures store. ;) Some people have armies of only-pirates (I've a exclusive pirate player in my area, and at least two more with a pirate army among his multiple armies)

In the upcoming MK2 (rules revision) Warmachine's faction books, the future Mercenary book will have a specific section for the Privateers.

If you're diggin' pirates you may be interested to see some of the Cryxian warriors, they've got their own pirates reflecting the locale of their island kingdom. Check out the Queen of the Broken Coast (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/cryx/warcasters/skarre-queen-of-the-broken-coast) warcaster and her Satyxis Raiders (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/cryx/units/satyxis-raiders-unit), the Revenant Pirate Crew (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/cryx/units/revenant-pirate-crew-unit), or even the Black Ogrun Boarding Party (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/cryx/units/black-ogrun-boarding-party-unit) units.
Even the Lich Lord Terminus (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/cryx/warcasters/lich-lord-terminus) has a bit of an undead pirate feel.;)

I have just started a Pirate contract and I have to say I am enjoying it.

The one thing I will say is that to begin with it is often better starting with one of the big 4 factions (from either Warmachine or Hoards). The reason I say this is that it makes things a lot more straight forward. The reason for that is that if you choose Khador (for example) you just buy anything that says Khador on the box. Two of the guys who started when I did and they choose mercs to start with and the guy who sold them their stuff knew nothing about the game, it seems, and they were luck that the extra stuff they bought went with their respective starter boxes. This coupled with they found it tougher using mercs than myself and the others who choose the main factions.

All that being said, if you research what you buy carefuly mercs will serve you well, they just need a little more insight and forethought than jumping in with the main factions alows.

You know what my recomendation would be. I would say depending on how many of you are wanting to give it a go is buy one of each (or one per person) of the starter sets (there are currently 6 Warmachine and 4 Hoards) and try them all. Then you can sort out who gets what after you have all played a few games.

The only thing to remember is that the starter box sets are not nessiceraly balanced and some may do better than others (consistanly). The other thing to keep in mind is that trying to pick up both Warmachine and Hoards rules at the same time can be very confusing.

The way I choose my first faction, Cryx, was purely on the models. And I would always recomend that way, the last thing you want is to paint models you hate to look at! Of course if you pay someone to paint your models for you then thats not so much of an issue :p

Good luck in choosing anyway.

Thanks Guys for your input. I have been looking into this more, but after I get some more information. I really just want to stick with an all Mercs group. Then again I am going to start off slow with just a piece at a time. The contracts look neat by the way they are written. Now it is just trying to figure out what each one means. :) With that being said I still need to read up on all the other factions as well to learn more overall how things go before I really start buying minatures :)

As noone else has mentioned it here, Tabletop Commander (http://www.tabletopcommander.com/) is a very useful program for creating an army. It helps even more for the different contracts!

I'm a die hard protectorate of menoth player myself.

there's just something satifying about yelling "BURN HEATHEN, BURN!" at your opponent while proceeding to scoure his army from the table with fire and holy might ;)

I play Khador. It started with the Battlebox, and I loved the Art on the front of it: Matt Wilson's Sorscha, Juggernaut and Destroyer. I kept at it, and eventually picked up Irusk.

Since then, people are happy that I don't play Trollbloods or Pirates because I pass enough tough rolls, people start questioning my dice.

(In case you don't know, ATC, a Tough roll is made when your figure would normally be destroyed. You roll a d6 and if it comes up a 5 or a 6, then your figure remains in play but Knocked Down).

I started with the cryxian battlegroup, because of the beastial look of 'jacks, especially the bonejacks (light warjacks of Cryx), who remind me of some enemies in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle video game. Now I have a pretty big collection of undead monstuosities.

I also play some Khadoran battlegroups (I love the "Bigger is better" way of mind of this faction) and Everblight's warpacks (Dragons rule!!!)

PS: Please forgive me for possible mistakes, I don't practice english very often.

PS2: Wow, extrem topic revival...
